AC fin base and top coatings developmentHindalco’s coating technology team developed advanced coatings for AC fin stock, achieving a dual-layer system with hydrophilic topcoat and durable base coat. The topcoat required a contact angle of less than 10 degrees for optimal moisture management; the base coat needed to withstand 1,500 hours of salt spray testing while maintaining adhesion and protection. The coatings needed to cure in 20 seconds for high production throughput. Initial challenges with hydrophilicity in the topcoat were resolved in the third trial at VIVA Composite Panels, Umergaon. The final coating system, with a combined thickness of 2 microns, met all performance and durability standards. The coated fin stock passed all customer-end tests at Amber Industries and Eskay Industries. The coatings achieved 30% cost reduction compared to previous solutions, with material savings and enhanced efficiency. Patents have been filed for both base and top coatings, reinforcing Hindalco’s position in coating technology for aluminium substrates. The project demonstrates Hindalco's commitment to cost-efficiency, sustainability and innovation.
