In this message, Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries, reflects on the lessons nature offers, the role of aluminium and copper in enabling a sustainable future, and Hindalco's continued progress across key sustainability priorities.
World Environment Day is an opportunity for us to stop and think about our planet and the role we play in shaping its future.
This year’s theme, ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future’, is a reminder that nature is our best teacher. From forests to coastal ecosystems, nature shows us how resilience, balance, and regeneration must go hand in hand. At Hindalco, our goal is to bring these principles into everything we do.
Our metals – Aluminium and Copper – are the building blocks for a sustainable world. While aluminium enables lightweighting and circularity, copper provides the foundation for electrification, renewable energy, electric mobility, and efficient power grids.
Beyond the impact of our metals, we are equally committed to strengthening how we operate – reducing our footprint, conserving resources, and building long-term resilience. Our steady progress across these priorities continues to earn significant recognition.
- Global benchmarks: We scored 89 in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2026, placing us among the Top 1% globally in the Aluminium industry. We also secured a 90th percentile ranking in EcoVadis.
- Renewable Energy: We reached 470 MW of renewable capacity. This includes our 200 MW round-the-clock project at Aditya Aluminium – a first-of-its-kind initiative in India’s industrial sector.
- Water stewardship: We recycled and reused 21.78 million m³ of water, including 19.86 million m³ at our aluminium operations (30.99%) and 1.92 million m³ at our copper operations (25.16%). We also harvested 18 million m³ of rainwater, strengthening our long-term water security.
- Nature and Biodiversity: We planted 8.55 lakh saplings, taking our cumulative total to nearly 6.3 million. This includes 1.25 lakh mangroves near Dahej and 20,000 saplings for ecological restoration near Aditya Aluminium, alongside initiatives such as tree transplantation, habitat creation, and removal of invasive species.
- Circularity in Action: Our 50 KT aluminium recycling facility is now operational, and the 60 KT copper recycling facility is on track for commissioning in H1 FY27.
- Advancing Zero Waste: We achieved 88% waste utilisation, and 9 plants and 1 mine are now certified as Zero Waste to Landfill.
As we look ahead, our direction is clear: we must pursue nature positivity by conserving every drop of water, reducing and re-using waste, rehabilitating mined areas, and finding innovative ways to save energy.
As I have said before, this journey is not measured by milestones alone but by the choices we make every day – on the shopfloor, in our offices, and in the way we think about resources, efficiency, and impact.
