Innovation
The packaging industry has one of the highest demands for sustainable and low-carbon solutions such as aluminium. Being durable in nature and infinitely recyclable, aluminium is regarded as an excellent choice for use in packaging, especially as the world collectively strides towards net-zero carbon emissions.
Just how sustainable is aluminium?
Compared to other forms of packaging, aluminium can be recycled an infinite number of times without losing any of its strength or durability. Moreover, recycling aluminium uses just 5 percent of energy and reduces the carbon footprint by approximately 95% when compared to producing primary aluminium.
In 2015, our wholly-owned subsidiary, Novelis, launched evercycleTM—aluminium made entirely from recycled content for use in food containers and other specialty applications. When launched, evercycleTM was a groundbreaking innovation as until then, packaging solutions made entirely from recycled material was unheard of. In an industry first, Novelis gave the world a lesson in sustainable aluminium manufacturing, paving the way for a circular economy.
More recently, in July 2022, Novelis announced that it is expanding its evercycleTM portfolio to cater to the cosmetics industry. Evercycle Cosmetics has been certified by SCS Global Services—an independent third-party verification body—to contain 100% recycled aluminium.
"With increasing consumer desire for more sustainable products, Novelis is proud to offer our customers a new packaging solution that is not only made from 100% recycled aluminium but one that can also be easily recycled again. As we take steps to decrease carbon emissions 30% by 2026 and become a carbon neutral company by 2050 or sooner, we remain committed to increasing the amount of recycled content in our products."

Developed in collaboration with Anomatic, evercycle Cosmetics will serve as a sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solution for the beauty, skin and wellness segments. Anomatic is a global leader in anodised aluminium packaging solutions, having patented their anodising technology back in 1967.
What is anodised aluminium?
Anodising is an electrochemical process that changes the composition of aluminium by adding a decorative and durable barrier while preserving its sustainable characteristics.
"We are proud of our longstanding partnership with Novelis, enabling us to develop a groundbreaking product that reduces our carbon footprint and benefits brands and consumers alike, who share a passion for more sustainable solutions," says Mark Ormiston, Vice President, Innovation, Technology and Sustainability, at Anomatic.
Novelis' partnership with Anomatic will revolutionise the future of cosmetics packaging, offering customers around the world aesthetic and eco-friendly all-aluminium containers that are also 100% recyclable. Customers can simply place their empty containers into their nearest recycling bins, thus contributing to a circular economy and a much lower carbon consumption.
